We hear a lot about the high efficiency of electric heaters, but it is difficult to find information on the transmission energy losses from the point of generation at the hydro dams to the suburban household, or to high intensity industrial users. Now that we are also importing energy from Victoria via the Bass Strait cable it would also be interesting to know the transmission losses involved, as it would be to know the efficiency of coal-fired (and gas-fired) generation versus hydro.

Love the online magazine! Could you give me some advice on what local groups have established around Hobart to get 'buying power' for sustainable living products (e.g. solar panels, insulation). Perhaps you have run a story in the past that you could refer me to? I'm also quite interested in how they effectively started such a group. Thanks!

So, I have to dob someone in before I can enter this month's competition?

A number of homes in my community have taken many steps to improve their energy footprint, but one of the most difficult stumbling blocks has been retrofitting insulation into walls – without costing an arm and a leg. We found great difficulty finding good pertinent information on this subject and, after some trialling, ended up developing an advisory that may help others. It is available here: http://waterworksvalley.com/how-to-insulate-the-walls-of-your-home/

Hi, I'm an ex-mainlander, who had never come across the term "heat pump" before I moved to Tasmania in 2006. In early June this year I moved into a house which has what was described to me by the landlady (and by the Condition Report) as a 'heat pump'. I wasn't given the heater's paperwork until several weeks after I moved in. I have now found out that this 'heat pump' is in fact a fixed fan heater. My Aurora bill forecast is astronomical. I am very worried. My only current income is Disability Pension so I am in a bit of a bind. I don't know what to do.

Can you suggest an effective dehumidifier that removes water from air and makes it potable?

I'd like to comment on the tap water versus bottled water issue. I read many comments that tap water is just as good as bottled water. City tap water is treated with chemicals and has added chlorine and fluoride. Chlorine is a toxic chemical that is known to cause cancer. Tests have shown that people who drink and/or shower with chlorinated water are 80 times more likely to get cancer than those who don't. I will not drink or cook with unfiltered tap water. I also used a shower filter when I lived in an area that had city water. I think people should be made aware of the dangers of chlorinated water and not encouraged to drink it unless it's filtered. It is NOT SAFE.
