Good lighting is so important

The outrageous Dame Edna says "I feel I can express myself in the bathroom – it's the one room where I can really let myself go".

We think she's talking about the decor – and good lighting is an important aspect of good decor and design in your bathroom, just as anywhere else.

Function and ambience

Appropriate lighting is a balance between function and ambience. In any room, you should plan to install several light sources and also allow for varying intensities and layers of light. This applies in the bathroom, where the priority is strong, clean ambient light, with task lighting at the mirror or vanity.

Practical and flattering

At the bathroom mirror, three light sources create an even wash of light with no shadows when you're shaving or applying make-up. Ideally, this will include the central light with two side sources from wall fittings.

Different globes cast different light qualities – fluorescent lights are popular for central fixtures in the bathroom because of their crisp, white light. They can be harsh on skin tones, although colour-improved fluorescents are available in tubes, as well as in the energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs. Halogen bulbs give the most flattering and accurate light on the face.

In the mood

In large bathrooms with a spa, plan to incorporate mood lighting, just as you would in other living areas – include dimmers on the fittings that light the spa area to create a romantic ambience.

Combo units

It's a sensible idea to have the bathroom extractor fan wired into the main bathroom light, so both turn on together. Combo light/fan/heat units are excellent, providing light, an exhaust fan and safe radiant warmth generated by the light globes themselves.

For kids

In a home with small children, a night-light plugged into a power point inside or just outside the bathroom is a simple and practical idea. Planning the position of switches for convenience and ease of access at night means that no-one has to fumble around in the dark!

Safety

In an area where steam and water are always present, electrical safety is critical and all bathroom lighting must be professionally installed by a qualified electrician.
