Hobart City

Here's a 'how to' guide of the best ways to see the best of Hobart.

By water – take a cruise on the River Derwent on one of the many ferry boats that depart from the Brook Street Pier. There are lunch cruises, cruises that just cruise, cruises to Peppermint Bay for lunch and cruises to the Cadbury chocolate factory.

By bus – a beautiful old red double-decker can give you a unique view of Hobart's many historical sights and attractions. Why not stop off at the world-famous Cascade Brewery for a tour and a taste?

By air – Tasair offers a range of scenic flights including a Hobart City and Derwent Estuary tour

By foot – Grab a walking map from the visitor centre (external link) and hit the pavement! Head south along the waterfront to Salamanca Place and through to historic Battery Point.

Wilderness

The quintessential central highlands trip would have to be a visit to the Cradle Mountain Lake St Claire National Park. A walk to the iconic location of Dove Lake is just one of the activities available. There are countless bushwalking activities to suit all weather conditions and all levels of fitness. Wine and dine in the warmth and comfort of the Cradle Mountain Lodge or the Cradle Mountain Chateau. Why not spend the day indulging at the Waldheim Alpine Spa? You can also try canoeing on Dove Lake (during the warmer months!) or the more sedate activity of fly-fishing.

Coastal

If you're feeling energetic, nothing showcases the east coast of Tasmania like the world-famous Wineglass Bay. Part of the Freycinet National Park, access to the Wineglass Bay walk is a few kilometres from the town of Coles Bay. The track is well marked, and the hardest part is walking up to the top of 'The Saddle', which is at the mid-point of the track. Take a snack and plenty of water and take the time to enjoy a swim or just walking on the pristine, white beach. Afterwards, you can reward yourself with a drink or a meal at the beautiful Freycinet Lodge.

Rural

The Tamar Valley is far from being just farms and haystacks and it's only 15 minutes from Launceston's CBD. One of the best ways to spend a day here is to explore the beautiful range of wining and dining at the valley's premium vineyards. You'll find over 20 cellar doors and vineyard restaurants for meals, tours and tastings of famous labels including Janz, Bay of Fires and Rosevears Estate. Follow the links from the Tamar Valley web site (external link) to the Tamar Valley wine route.
