Setting the mood

Lighting can make all the difference

Your bedroom is where you need a lot of flexibility with your lighting. Consider this: if you're getting ready to go out for the night, you need bright light in which to get changed etc, but when you're ready for bed you want the light soft and subdued. The best solution here is to fit dimmer switches to your main bedroom light and your reading lights. It will give you the best of both worlds and everything in between. And here's a good idea…put two switches in for your main light – one in the normal place by the door and the other by your bedside so you don't have to get out of bed to turn the light off.

If you want less clutter in your bedroom then instead of bedside lamps think about downlights. They make a perfect directional reading light that can be adjusted up or down for brightness with the addition of a dimmer switch.

Do you have a walk-in wardrobe? Then think about putting in a hands-free sensor switch. It will turn the light on automatically when you enter and turn off when you're gone.
